Michigan police prevented a tragic accident from jumping to his death early Tuesday morning by lining up 13 semi-trucks under the bridge. The startling photo of more than a dozen trucks parked side-by-side below the overpass on Interstate 696 went viral this week. At first glance, it was thought that the trucks are causing traffic on the road. However, they served a noble purpose.

The incident was caused by a man standing on the ledge of the bridge threatening to end his life around 1am on Tuesday. However, the Michigan State Police closed the highway at Coolidge in both directions.

Authorities came up with an unusual plan to stop the accident from happening and they closed both lanes but allowed semi-trucks to pass by and to stop right below the bridge. Police instructed the truck drivers to line up underneath the overpass to somehow cushion the fall of the man.

The Michigan State Police, Huntington Woods, and Oak Park Police all worked together and talked to the unnamed man to keep him from jumping. The police sent out negotiators and talked to the man for several hours before he walked off the bridge.

It took three hours for the man to calm down the man and the roads opened at 4 am. He was then taken by Huntington Woods police to Beaumont hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Fortunately, there is no one harmed in the incident. In an interview, Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said troopers typically work with truckers during such incidents.

The Michigan State Police Department tweeted a photo of the semi-trucks all lined up saving a man’s life.

The caption reads, “This photo does show the work troopers and local officers do to save the public. But also in that photo is a man struggling with the decision to take his own life. Please remember help is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.”

Police reminded people considering suicide to call the emergency hotline or a loved one. They added that there are many ways to resolve problems other than taking your own life.

“There are so many people that can help you make the choice to get help and live! It is our hope to never see another photo like this again.”
