Skin positivity is one of the popular movements today. It is all about embracing the color of our skin and as well as its imperfections. It aims to empower both men and women to be comfortable with their own skin and feel beautiful.
Nyakim Gatwech, a South Sudanese model, is a good role model for people to not be afraid of their skin color, and rather, wear it with proudness.
Breaking free from the conventional perception of beauty with her beautiful deeply pigmented skin and strong willpower, Nyakim has been teaching people not to be afraid of the Dark. The blooming fashion icon, Nyakim is proud of her melanin and she makes sure that the world is aware of it.
“Beauty is in the beholder. My chocolate is elegant. So is what I represent. I represent a nation of warriors. You can see it in my presentation. MaMa Africa. My roots run deep!” Nyakim shared how she values her deeply colored skin, once posting a photo of her with the quoted caption. As usual, her photo garnered thousands of likes and supports from netizens.
Although with todays advancement and progress, the color of our skin and our race should not be an issue anymore. However, not everyone is a fan of the beauty in diversity. Nyakim shared on the internet how some people mistreated her merely due to the color of her skin. “You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin.”
Nyakim shared her memorable experience with an Uber driver. The driver asked the model if she would be willing to bleach her skin in exchange of 10,000 dollars. Nyakim, who couldn’t answer his question, laughed instead. The Uber driver insisted for an answer, in which Nyakim finally answered.“hell to the f—king yeah that a no, why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God bless me with.”
The insensitive Uber driver couldn’t believe what Nyakim said. He couldn’t understand why Nyakim sees her beautiful skin color as a gift from above. “My skin is who I am,” Nyakim captioned in a post.
Dubbed as the Queen of the Dark, Nyakim is an ambassador for diversity in the fashion industry. “Black is bold, black is beautiful, black is gold… Don’t let American standards damage your African soul.” Nyakim’s message to her fellow people with beautiful pigmented skin sure is a good reminder to love and be proud of their skin. After all, beauty is not only defined by the color of our skin, there is beauty in diversity!
Here are Nyakim’s beautiful pictures uploaded on Instagram which are getting numerous support for standing up with people of color. Each Nyakim’s gorgeous picture is matched with a proud caption, truly embracing her unique deeply pigmented color. Her Instagram page has become her outlet platform for embracing colorism. It is where she celebrates her dark complexion while tackling racial and skin issues.
“Melanin Monday, so my new nickname is Queen of the Dark and I love it!…”
“When you look into your reflection through the mirror what do you see? I hope you see nothing but how beautiful, smart, intelligent, outstanding, unique you are you!!”
“Melanin Monday! Dear my moonshine dark skin, sun kissed complexion, burn skin, or whatever they might call you. You are beyond beautiful and the love I have for is unconditional because you are me. You represent me and I represent you and let show the world how beautiful and intelligent we are apart from just being dark skin…”
“Nothing is more attractive than a woman who is comfortable in her own skin… nothing more attractive than a woman who have confidence.”
May Nyakim Gawetch, is our inspiration in embracing diversity and who we are. She genuinely feels beautiful and no one and no standards can take away that feeling from her. May we stop trying to change the color we are born in, and start loving it.
Embrace who we truly are and be proud of it! As what Nyakim captioned in her photo, there is nothing more attractive than a woman comfortable in her own skin!
