There is no doubt that smartphones are one of the greatest inventions produced by our advancing technology. After all, the high-tech device is often used to connect with people. Through the help of smartphones, we can communicate with one other in an instant, we are always updated with the current happenings, and we can reach out to other people in a matter of seconds.
Sadly, despite its power to ‘connect’ people, smartphones are also causing distractions and divisions within families.
Due to the wide array of enjoyable features smartphones have, it seems that it is eating up most of the attention of its users. In fact, two years ago, Juliana Farris Mazurkewicz shared a photo of a controversial signage posted at her daughter’s daycare. Posted on the door of a daycare in Hockley Texas was a desperate plea to the parents of their adorable students.
The bold and direct signage posted on the daycare’s door said:
“You are picking up your child! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!!!!
Your child is happy to see you! Are you not happy to see your child?? We have seen children trying to hand their parents their work they completed and the parent is on the phone.
We have heard a child say, ‘Mommy, mommy, mommy…’ and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child. It is appalling. Get off your phone!!”
Not all parents were pleased with the bold message of the signage. However, for Juliana, the signage rings a lot of truth. In fact, Juliana admitted that she was holding her smartphone when the signage captured her attention.
The dutiful mother then proceeded to take a photo of the controversial signage and shared the ugly truth it speaks on her Facebook account.
Within a few hours, parents shared their two cents about the day care’s direct and blunt request. Some parents were not pleased by the way the daycare management called their attention while some parents agreed with it.
Simone Campbell, a Facebook user, disagreed with the ways of the daycare. “I’m a qualified educator and although I agree that parents shouldn’t be on their phones while picking up their kids I would never write such a disrespectful poster… instead they could have put up a poster about the benefits of parents engaging with their children.. they have not gone about this the right way.”
“Some parents will always defend their wrongs No phone call is more important than your child’s feelings…period! Leave the cell phone in the car for those precious moments when you greet your child after all day being apart. They will remember.” Rose Littlejohn, another Facebook user, on the other hand, supported the plea of the daycare.
Whether parents disagreed or agreed with the message the daycare would like to deliver, it is undeniable that its message resonated with numerous people. In fact, Juliana’s photo reached an astounding 12 million shares which means that over 12 million people found the message very relatable.
“I was a bit shocked, but I didn’t feel any negativity towards the daycare. I know that the staff has the best interests of the children in mind, even to the point where they are willing to offend the parent.” Juliana said, sharing her opinion about the bold action taken by the daycare.
And many shared their own thoughts about the matter:
“lt makes me so sad when l see Mothers acting this way when l am shopping. The poor, precious little one cry “Mommy, Mommy”, and Mommy doesn’t even cast their eyes to the baby. Frequently, they are carrying on loud obnoxious conversations. l try to get the baby’s attention, and smile at them.” — Dolores Cooper
“I love this. This should be in every day care or school where kids are being picked up from work or school. The kids could also be off the phones too.” — Saundra Lloyd
Whether the bold action of the daycare is offending to some parents or not, still, at the end of the day no one should argue that our children deserve our undivided attention. We may not be aware of it but for our children, our attention, affection, and affirmation are all that matter. And with our eyes glued to our smartphones, showering our children with these three vital A’s will never happen.
